What the IIHS Measures
When it comes to measuring the safety of a vehicle, the IIHS tests evaluate two aspects of safety:
- Crashworthiness — how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash. To determine a vehicles crashworthiness, 5 tests are administered: moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints.
- Crash Avoidance and Mitigation — technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity. When it comes to crash avoidance and mitigation, vehicles with available front crash prevention systems are rated basic, advanced or superior, based on the type of system and performance in track tests. Headlamps are also tests and rated good, acceptable, marginal or poor.
Once tested, each vehicle is rated based on performance with Good, Acceptable, Marginal or Poor.

Top Safety Pick vs. Top Safety Pick+
In order for a vehicle to be awarded for 2017 Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn good ratings in five crashworthiness tests — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints — as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.
To qualify for 2017 Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the five crashworthiness tests, an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating.
